CARE Team

If a student is in immediate crisis or is a threat to themselves or others, please contact campus police by calling 911 or 559-244-5911.

Mission:

The mission of the MCC CARE Team is to deliver a proactive and supportive multidisciplinary team approach providing timely intervention of resources for students, faculty, and staff in order to address student behavioral concerns and promote student academic success and safety.

Purpose:

  • Provide a structured, positive method for addressing students' behaviors recognized by someone in the campus community.
  • Manage each case individually while addressing mental health, academic, or safety concerns.
  • Initiate appropriate and supportive interventions separate from the disciplinary process.
  • Coordinate student responses involving various campus resources and services.

Tips for Supporting Students Demonstrating Concerning Behaviors

Students encounter challenges for a variety of reasons. Academics, family problems, social situations, work, and financial concerns are just some of the sources of stress. While most students cope successfully with the demands of college life, for some the pressures become overwhelming and unmanageable. Concerning behaviors may range from interacting differently in the classroom to being overly withdrawn or aggressive. In all these situations, we would like to encourage our campus community to pay attention to our students’ needs, reach out to show them you care, and when needed, make a referral to the CARE team to access more resources.

  • Talk to the student in private when you both have time.
  • Let the student know you care and have noticed something concerning to you; be non-judgmental and aware of their perspectives.
  • Help identify and share resources available to the student's Basic Needs Resources.
  • Respect the student's value system.
  • Let the student know you want to refer them to a campus group of people who will offer referrals and resources if needed.
  • When appropriate, refer your concern to the CARE team using Starfish in your portal.

Steps for a Staff Member to Refer a Student to the CARE Team by Raising a Starfish Flag:

  1. Log in to Starfish: Log in to the Starfish directly from your Staff Portal.
  2. Navigate to the Student Profile: Once logged in, navigate to the student's profile for whom you want to raise a Madera CARE flag. You can often search for a student by name, ID, or course.
  3. Find the " Flag" Option: On the student's profile page, click on the “Flag" tab located on the toolbar.
  4. Select the Madera CARE Flag: Among the available flag options, choose the "Madera CARE" flag. This flag is specifically designed for situations where a student is displaying behaviors that are concerning, disruptive, and impede their own ability to function successfully or safely.
  5. Select Course: If applicable, choose the relevant course in which the concerning behavior or situation is taking place.
  6. Provide Specific Details: A dialog box will appear, prompting you to provide specific details about the student's behavior or situation that led you to raise the CARE flag. Be as detailed as possible to help the CARE Team who will follow up on the flag.
  7. Submit the Flag: Once you have filled out the necessary information, submit the CARE flag.
  8. Additional Follow-up: After submitting the Madera CARE flag, CARE team members will be notified to follow up with the situation. They will assess the situation, reach out to the student, and provide appropriate support.
  9. Monitor and Communicate: Continue to monitor the student's progress and any updates related to the Madera CARE flag. Maintain open communication with the support staff involved to ensure that the student receives the assistance they need.
